LAYZOR

Meet the LAYZOR - one man's quest to convert his K40 laser cutter into something much more usable (and reliable!).

The LAYZOR - K40 laser cutter conversion project

For anyone that may not be aware, the K40 laser cutter is the name given to the cheap Chinese laser cutters you tend to find on places like eBay and AliExpress, generally priced around £500. That may sound like a steal, until you actually get your hands on it! Straight out of the box, these machines are often riddled with issues. The bundled software isn't great, and neither is the build quality.

To remedy all of this, Frederico of Man Made Mayhem set himself the task of converting his K40, whilst maintaining as many of the original parts as possible. Whilst he was at it, he also increased the bed size to 400mm x 600mm, added an adjustable Z axis, and enclosed water cooling for good measure.

Conceptualised in January and finished in May, this is a very impressive build. If you want to read about the entire build process, you can find it all on his blog: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, Part 10.

If you're interested in converting your own K40 laser cutter, you can pre-order the plans over on the official website.
